Beautiful Things: Spanish Vargueno Cabinet

Here, a Captivating Cabinet - How would you use this? Where would you place it?

A Renaissance-style Spanish Vargueno cabinet on stand. Block front with ornately pierced ormolu gallery with eagle finials over a central door with columns flanked by eight drawers. Four on each side on ball and claw feet, resting on three drawer stand with twist turned legs and stretcher base. Secret drawers and hidden compartments throughout and resting on ebony stand.

Of the many ways I see this piece, certainly, an obvious and great choice is at the end of an entrance hall - perhaps in a large niche with soft charcoal grey grasscloth wall covering. Another captivating place might be as a focal point in a public room, the living room perhaps with a dramatic red silk damask wall covering behind.

Some less obvious ways could be in a dining room - to quietly contain the folded napkins in different cloths, pressed and folded ready for use in each of the drawers. If you might enjoy the more private enjoyment of this cabinet, perhaps in a man’s dressing closet, used as a jewelry and watch center, or perhaps collections of folded silk ties?

If you were my Client - Let’s build an entire room around this!
