Designer Spotlight - Tord Boonjte
I first learned of Tord Boontje in 2009 when I was in New York, at the Swarovski showroom. We were designing a chandelier, and Tord was one of my great inspirations. Like any great designer, he has forged his aesthetic in a mysterious and mythical way - always unique and specific to the moment. Tord Boontje came from the Netherlands to London to create designs that meld design and emotion that cover a range of products - here I would like to show you his lighting. You can jump to the post that shows his fabrics here …..
“Tord Boontje is known for his expression of romanticism in contemporary design. Some of his designs are whimsical and light-hearted; at the same time they can be technically innovative and connect with strong emotions.” “With a strong interest in storytelling, nature, decoration, materials and technology, his work has an experimental approach. The results can vary from ornate to minimal, from being handcrafted to being made-by-robots.”
“The Studio’s work draws from a belief that modernism does not mean minimalism, that contemporary does not forsake tradition, and that technology does not abandon people and senses.”
Above, the large sphere is 4.5 metres across and has over 150,000 Swarovski Crystals! This installation is at the MGM Cotai resort in Macau.
